BERTIE - Type 1
BERTIE is a structured diabetes education course that teaches people with type 1 diabetes how to manage insulin doses according to carbohydrate intake. Participants are encouraged to solve problems individually to assess what works best for them, and learn what to do to stay healthy.

DAFNE - Type 1
DAFNE gives people with Type 1 diabetes the skills to systematically approach the highs and lows of their diabetes. It gives them an individualised insulin regimen and the knowledge to adjust this. It is the longest standing course for diabetes and has a wealth of research and evidence behind it. It is a national programme and each centre and educator has to undergo a rigorous quality assurance to make sure that if you attend DAFNE in Scotland it will be the same message as if you attend in London.

DAFNE 17-25 - Type 1
This DAFNE course follows the same structure and curriculum as the other DAFNE courses but it is specifically for younger adults. This means that you will be in a group of people the same age as you, who have similar experiences (and anxieties) to share. The groups are led by healthcare professionals who usually work in the transition or young person clinics, so they know a lot about the tricky bits of living with Type 1 diabetes as a young adult; like starting university or first jobs, or going to festivals or backpacking. They’ve heard it all before, so you should feel able to ask all those questions you never could before and make some new friends along the way!

DAFNE Pump - Type 1
The DAFNE pump course follows the same principles as the DAFNE course. It provides people with skills to confidently make changes to their insulin regimen in a structured and safe way. The key difference is that DAFNE pump is just for people who are already using a pump. Everyone else in the group will be learning how to adjust their basal and bolus rates via the pump, and you may well see people using different types of pump and technology. If you have already done a DAFNE course you may be offered a DAFNE pump course when you first start on pump therapy, to give you the extra skills to make the most of this new way of looking after your diabetes.
