What is DAFNE Pump?
DAFNE stands for Dose Adjustment For Normal Eating. It is a FREE programme for adults with Type 1 diabetes registered with a GP in south London or receiving Type 1 diabetes specialist care in south London. DAFNE Pump is a specialist course available for pump users only.
- The aim of DAFNE Pump is to help you lead as normal a life as possible, while controlling your blood glucose levels, hence reducing the risk of long-term diabetes complications
- Run by DAFNE Pump educated local healthcare professionals who are experts in Type 1 diabetes
- DAFNE programmes are a friendly, supportive environment, where everyone is working towards a common goal
DAFNE Pump is a 5-day programme (usually 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday or split over five weeks) plus a follow-up session around 8 weeks after the course. The DAFNE Pump course is about learning from experience. During the week you practice the skills of carbohydrate estimation and insulin
How does it work?
Two specialist diabetes healthcare professionals run groups of up to 8 people. Courses run 5 days either over one week or split over 5 weeks. There is a follow up with educators 6 weeks after the course. Friends and family can accompany a person attending on the first day of the course.
Reduction in HbA1c 1% (10mmol/l) at 3 months, with sustained reduction (0.3%) at 12 months.
Improved confidence in ability to self-care and other mental wellbeing scores.
Reduced glucose variability so fewer hypoglycaemic episodes needing ambulance or hospital admission, and fewer diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) admissions.
No weight change (this is a good thing as you would anticipate some weight gain as people improve their HbA1c as they are passing less sugar in their urine).
